Hey there, coating enthusiasts! Are you confused about the difference between NACE and SSPC? Well, don’t worry, because Toronto Industrial is here to break it down for you.

First things first, let’s talk about what NACE and SSPC are. NACE stands for National Association of Corrosion Engineers, while SSPC stands for The Society for Protective Coatings. Both of these organizations are dedicated to promoting the use of protective coatings to prevent corrosion and other forms of damage to industrial structures.

How do NACE and SSPC differ from each other?

So what’s the difference between them? Essentially, NACE focuses more on the engineering and technical aspects of coatings, while SSPC is more concerned with the application and maintenance of coatings.

NACE is known for its certification programs, which are highly respected in the industry. If you’re looking for someone with a deep understanding of the technical aspects of coatings, such as materials selection and corrosion control, a NACE-certified professional is a great choice.

On the other hand, if you’re looking for someone with a focus on practical application and maintenance, SSPC may be a better fit. SSPC offers a range of training and certification programs that are designed to help professionals master the skills needed to apply and maintain coatings effectively.

Did you know?

NACE International and SSPC have merged to form the Association for Materials Protection and Performance (AMPP), with the aim of providing a unified voice for the corrosion control and protective coatings industries. The new association consists of two governance structures: AMPP, a 501(c)(6), and AMPP Global Center, a 501(c)(3). AMPP will provide services in certification, accreditation, membership, advocacy, and public affairs, while AMPP Global Center will focus on standards, technical and research activities, conferences, events, education, training, publications, and pre-professional programming. With more than 40,000 members in 130 countries, AMPP is set to be the world’s largest non-profit materials protection and performance organization. Despite the merger, some program details, such as NACE and SSPC accreditations and certifications, will remain unchanged for the near future.

Dig deeper:

Prior to the merger that formed the Association for Materials Protection and Performance (AMPP), two leading professional associations in the corrosion and coatings fields, NACE International and SSPC: The Society for Protective Coatings, had entered into a definitive agreement to combine their operations and programs starting on January 1, 2021. The transaction was subject to the approval of the Pennsylvania Attorney General’s Office and was expected to close in October 2020. The new organization, with Bob Chalker serving as CEO, would retain the staff and facilities of NACE’s headquarters in Houston, Texas, and SSPC’s headquarters in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, as well as all staff and offices located in the U.S. and abroad. The goal of this partnership was to provide the asset protection industry with a stronger workforce and a unified voice to better serve the growing needs of the industries.
